Deep Dish Dungeon Animal Hide: What the Demo Shows
What players can verify about Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide, including the demo item list, leather split, and iron-rod traps.
Searching a crafting menu for one missing stack is how most Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide questions start. The material matters because a finished-demo write-up puts it on the short list of items one player could generate, while leather sits on the list they could not. Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide is therefore a real demo-era item name, not a fan nickname for leather, but that report never records a drop, a node, or a recipe.
That gap is the whole problem. The free demo has been public since February 19, 2026, the full game was set for October 13, 2026, and the only explicit mention in the sources for this page is one inventory list. Where it spawns, what it crafts, and whether the full release changed it are still HOLD / unknown. This page separates those layers so you do not spend the demo’s three iron rods on a guess.
What “can generate” does and does not mean
The clearest primary note is a Steam community post from a player who had finished the demo. In player experience from that April 28 write-up, Animal Hide is grouped with materials they could get or generate: Stick, Rock, Wood Plank, Rat, Scrap Metal, Vines, Coal, Animal Hide, Apple, Raw Meat, Mushroom, Wild Pepper, and Algae.

Read that list as a personal completion log, not as a patch note. The author was telling stuck players what existed in their save. They did not attach quantities, rooms, or tools. A June 20 reply adds food recipes and a nail trick, and still never mentions hide. A demo database overview says its item pages match Steam demo v1013 (build 23,712,006), but the overview collected here does not reproduce an Animal Hide row. Treat v1013 confirmation as HOLD / unknown.
| Item in the April log | Status in that player experience | Use stated in the same thread |
|---|---|---|
| Stick | Could get or generate | None stated |
| Rock | Could get or generate | None stated |
| Wood Plank | Could get or generate | Paired with scrap metal for a late weapon upgrade |
| Rat | Could get or generate | Caught or trapped as a raw-meat source |
| Scrap Metal | Could get or generate | Late weapon upgrades, with wood planks |
| Vines | Could get or generate | None stated |
| Coal | Could get or generate | None stated |
| Animal Hide | Could get or generate | None stated |
| Apple | Could get or generate | Only food that post says you can eat raw; also a pot ingredient |
| Raw Meat | Could get or generate | Stew ingredient; rats are the stated source |
| Mushroom | Could get or generate | Veggie-pot ingredient; roasting is described for foods generally |
| Wild Pepper | Could get or generate | Veggie-pot ingredient |
| Algae | Could get or generate | None stated |
Thirteen names, one of them hide, and only a handful have any job attached. If your goal is Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide specifically, the honest takeaway is narrow: at least one player who believed they had cleared that demo build could produce it. That is not a farm route.
The same player closed by hoping later versions would let people harvest creatures they kill. That is player experience that corpse harvesting was not something they could do on that run. It does not reveal an alternate hide source. It only warns you not to treat a dead scorpion, bat, or moray as a hide pile.
Animal hide and leather are separate lines
Leather is the trap in this search. In that same April list, Leather is an item the player could not get or generate. Animal Hide is on the opposite list. Nothing in the thread says one is processed into the other.
| Question | Animal Hide | Leather |
|---|---|---|
| April player could obtain it? | Yes, on the generatable list | No, on the blocked list |
| Source, tool, or station named? | No | No |
| Tied to a written recipe? | No | No |
| Shown to be the same stack? | Not supported | Not supported |
| Status in the October 13, 2026 release | HOLD / unknown | HOLD / unknown |
Crude Leather Armor shows up later, as a crafting-table recipe they could not make unless they spent starting iron rods. The armor name includes “leather.” The item list includes both Animal Hide and Leather. The post never says which of those, if either, the armor consumes. Linking the recipe to Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide would be a guess. Leave the ingredient row as HOLD / unknown until the recipe icons are visible in your own build.
The other goods that April log could not generate are Clay, extra Iron Rods, Chains, Ragged Cloth, and Log. Ragged Cloth is the nearer cousin to a soft material, and it was unavailable too. Scrap Cape sits on the gated craft list beside the armor. No sentence connects cape, cloth, hide, or leather. Do not fold them into one fabric route.
The three iron rods, and why armor is a poor default
The April crafting complaint is more useful than its hide line, because it explains the bottleneck you will hit while experimenting.
Player experience: only three iron rods were available, along with the cooking pot already beside the campfire. With other inputs missing, a long set of crafting-table recipes could not be made unless those rods were spent on them. The blocked set they named was Nail, Backpack, Kettle, Smelter, Wood Chest, Barricade, Workbench, Water Pot, Wooden Bridge, Wooden Bow, Hammer, Grappling Hook, Pouch, Crude Leather Armor, Scrap Cape, Medium Sword, Long Sword, and Grindstone.
That is a budget problem, not a hide problem. Three rods cannot cover eighteen recipes. If a recipe asks for a rod, making Crude Leather Armor first can lock you out of a tool the dungeon actually uses.
| Gated craft in the April log | What the thread or the demo guide actually adds | Assume it needs Animal Hide? |
|---|---|---|
| Nail | April: no use. June 20 player experience: a hammer can fix a nail to a wall; with rope, that helps an out-of-reach sewer ladder. Other routes exist. | No. Not stated. |
| Hammer | April: found in the sewers after the handcrank in the workbench room; breaks metal bars. Also listed as a craft that needed rods. A world pickup and a craft recipe are different things. | No. Not stated. |
| Grappling Hook | Craft gated in the April log. A demo-guide caption shows official art of a grappling hook aimed at a high ledge. | No. Not stated. |
| Crude Leather Armor | Named only as a craft blocked unless rods are spent. Ingredients not listed. | HOLD / unknown. The name is not a recipe. |
| Grindstone | Asked for if you want weapon upgrades past scrap metal and wood planks. April player said it was not available. | No. Not stated. |
| Workbench | Listed as a gated craft, while the same post already describes a room with a workbench. | No. Not stated. |
| Backpack, Kettle, Smelter, Wood Chest, Barricade, Water Pot, Wooden Bridge, Wooden Bow, Pouch, Scrap Cape, Medium Sword, Long Sword | Named only as gated crafts. No ingredient list in these sources. | No. Not stated. |
Rod order, using only jobs the posts actually describe:
- Do not craft from the three rods until you have checked the sewer handcrank and whether a hammer is already in the world.
- The April player called that hammer easy to miss. They spent about an hour stuck, and swimming was allowed even though the game did not make that obvious. The hammer was in the sewers after the handcrank in the workbench room.
- If metal bars are still closed and no hammer has turned up, the hammer recipe is the craft with a stated dungeon job.
- Treat Crude Leather Armor as optional until its ingredient icons are on screen. A rod spent on unnamed armor is how a three-rod save gets stuck.
- Skip Grindstone as a goal if your build still matches the April note that further upgrades were unavailable. That line is old. Re-check after any update.
- Nail is no longer “useless” if you trust the June 20 player experience, but it is a ladder assist with other routes, not a hide sink.
In that same April run, metal bars and a single spider web were the breakable obstacles. The web fell to a torch. Goo piles and rock piles did not break. A June reply adds roots as terrain they still could not break. None of those obstacles are tied to hide.
Camp screenshots described in the demo guide already show a cooking pot, campfire, workbench, chest, and crafting stations. That matches a stocked refuge plus a harsher recipe list. A station you can see is not a recipe you can repeat.
Forging, in the April notes, is a mold-and-upgrade sequence near the end. Weapons can be improved with scrap metal and wood planks. Anything past that asked for a grindstone they could not get. Hide is not named as a forge input. Taking it to the forge is HOLD / unknown.
The Deep Dish Dungeon Steam store page is where you confirm which build you are actually playing. The item log above is player experience from the finished-demo Steam discussion, not a studio item sheet.
Food, enemies, and the harvest dead end
Hide searches often start from a cooking guide, because this game opens routes with meals and tools. In these sources, hide never enters a dish.
April player experience on food is limited and specific. Apple is the only food they could eat raw. Most foods could be turned on a spit into a roasted version. They found two pot recipes: a vegetable mix of wild pepper, mushroom, and apple, and a stew that adds raw meat. Raw meat came from rat traps, or from grabbing rats before they hid under debris.
The June 20 reply adds a mushroom-fish stew and a drumstick stew. Each needs two pieces gained by butchering fish or the bat near the end of that route. That is the first time butchering appears, and the output they describe is stew meat, not hide.
| Source | What it says about creatures or food | Hide mentioned? |
|---|---|---|
| April post | Rats supply raw meat | No |
| April post | Enemies seen: skeleton, scorpion, moray eel, large bat | No drops listed |
| April post | Player hoped kills would become harvestable | Suggests they were not looting corpses then |
| June 20 reply | Butcher fish and the end bat; two pieces per those stews | No |
| Demo guide overview | Cooking changes stats or grants an expedition ability; the pre-launch recipe list was still limited | No hide dish |
Placement in that April run, still player experience and easy to outdated: skeletons through much of the dungeon; scorpions in a descending hall off the main room; a moray eel in the sewers only while the water is raised and you are swimming; one large bat outside the forge, on the iron-key approach toward a prison key. None of those lines include a material drop.
There is no community-backed loop of the form “kill the bat, loot Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide, craft armor.” If a newer butcher prompt also outputs hide, that result is HOLD / unknown here.
Which sources can still bound this item
These release facts come from the demo guide overview, not from the hide post. They limit how far a demo inventory should be trusted.
- The studio frames the game as a first-person survival dungeon crawler and, in the guide’s wording, a survival metroidvania. Cooking and crafted tools open the way forward.
- The free Windows demo launched on February 19, 2026, with no time limit. Demo saves do not carry into the full game. The guide credits Behold Studios for that split.
- The full game was set for October 13, 2026, on Steam and Xbox, with day-one Game Pass. The stated price is $14.99, 14.99 euros, or 13.99 pounds, named by the studio on October 6, 2026.
- In that write-up the full Steam listing includes Windows and macOS, while the demo listing is Windows-only. Steam Deck Verified was announced on September 30, 2026.
- No in-game map or compass is planned. Players are expected to learn rooms, landmarks, shortcuts, and vertical links.
- Art in the guide is credited to Behold Studios and Raw Fury.
A hide stack gathered in the demo is not a head start on the full release. The save stays behind even if the April list is perfect.
There is also no map on which to mark a node. If you do pick up hide, write the landmark yourself: camp, sewer waterline, forge door, or whatever else is actually on screen.
| Evidence layer | When the sources place it | What it can support about this item |
|---|---|---|
| Finished-demo community post | April 28 thread date, after the February 19, 2026 demo launch | Hide generatable; leather not; armor craft rod-gated; no source named |
| Reply on that thread | June 20 | Stew butchering and a nail use; hide still unmentioned |
| Demo database overview | Matched by that site to v1013 / build 23,712,006 | Claims item pages exist; the hide row is not in the text collected here |
| Release notes in that overview | Demo February 19, 2026; full game set for October 13, 2026 | Demo items do not transfer; post-launch hide rules are not described |
Across those four layers, Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide is named once. The June reply, the v1013 overview excerpt, and the release notes add no second sighting and no ingredient list.
What you can check in one session
Use this as a verification pass. It does not uncover a spawn the sources forgot.
- Search your inventory for two different strings: Animal Hide and Leather. If only one exists, do not rename it in your notes.
- Open the camp stations and any crafting table. Copy icons and counts. If Animal Hide is an input, record the output. If it is absent, mark that recipe HOLD / unknown instead of substituting leather.
- Count iron rods before any craft. The April ceiling was three, plus the camp cooking pot, which that player did not treat as a spare rod pile. If your build shows another count, trust the build.
- Check the sewer for a placed hammer before you craft one. Metal bars were the break they cared about. One spider web fell to a torch.
- When you down the large bat or a fish, read the prompt. Write down whether the output is meat, hide, or both. The June report only documents meat for stew.
- Do not stockpile for the full game inside the demo. That file will not move.
Until step 2 shows a real recipe, Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide stays a confirmed name on one completion list and an unconfirmed crafting ingredient everywhere else.
FAQ
Is Deep Dish Dungeon animal hide obtainable?
In player experience from the April finished-demo post, yes. It is on the list of items that player could get or generate. No source, tool, or amount is given. Whether that remains true on demo v1013, or in the release set for October 13, 2026, is HOLD / unknown.
Does animal hide turn into leather or Crude Leather Armor?
The April log lists Animal Hide as obtainable and Leather as not obtainable. It also lists Crude Leather Armor as a craft that needed scarce iron rods. It never states ingredients. A hide-to-leather craft, or a hide-to-armor craft, is HOLD / unknown.
Should you spend iron rods on leather gear first?
Not by default. That playthrough had three iron rods and a long blocked-craft list, including the hammer and the grappling hook. Those two have exploration jobs the armor post does not document. Read the recipe icons before you spend a rod.
Will demo hide carry into the full game?
No. The demo guide cites Behold Studios on this point: the demo save does not transfer to the full release. Hide gathered in the demo stays in the demo.
