Deep Dish Dungeon guide: Demo Craft and Routes

Practical Deep Dish Dungeon guide for the Steam demo: materials, cooking, tools, enemies, and which Prison Key steps are still unconfirmed.

Start from the demo you can actually finish

If a cold camp and a sealed sewer stop your run, a Deep Dish Dungeon guide matters more than another lap of the same hallway. This Deep Dish Dungeon guide sticks to the free Steam demo: materials players could gather, dishes they cooked, the hammer path they reported, and the facts that are still unknown for the published October 13, 2026 release.

Behold Studios, in partnership with Raw Fury, frames Deep Dish Dungeon as a first-person survival metroidvania. Cooking is a progression system: a dish can change stats or grant an ability for an expedition. Crafted tools open paths through one hand-built vertical dungeon. No in-game map or compass is planned, so rooms, light, shortcuts, and vertical links are how you navigate.

Keep this Deep Dish Dungeon guide on two evidence layers. Official notes cover the free Windows demo that launched February 19, 2026, with no time limit, plus demo version v1013 matched to Steam build 23,712,006. Gather lists and routes come from player experience in the Steam thread "Finished Demo" (April 28, with a June 20 correction). Those posts may predate v1013. A public demo database still marked room maps and a full current route as open, so older steps stay labeled as community reports.

Demo progress is practice. Behold Studios has said the demo save does not transfer to the full game. The Deep Dish Dungeon Steam store page is the full-app listing. The demo listing is Windows-only. The full Steam listing includes Windows and macOS.

HOLD / unknown: the player cap. Official art shows parties of two and three, online co-op is discussed, and a community post asked whether four players had been added. Sources also mention an official player-count conflict without printing a number. Xbox Play Anywhere and the exact June 2026 patch notes are not in the text used here. Do not plan a four-stack route from this page.

How to move through a dungeon with no map

The space is one connected vertical dungeon, not random floors. Progress is a shortcut, a landmark, or a tool gate. Official camp art shows a cooking pot, campfire, workbench, chest, and crafting stations together. Use that cluster as home. Other published shots show mushrooms on a fire, a sword and iron shield against a skeleton, a grappling hook aimed at a high ledge, a sealed circular stone door, floor symbols, and a torch-lit statue.

Navigation that does not invent rooms:

  • Name each landing when you change height: camp, sewer water, shelf room, forge exterior.
  • If a barrier does not break, leave it. Several terrain types were not breakable in community reports.
  • A shortcut back to camp beats a deep branch with no food.
  • A wall torch can be a clue, not just a lamp. One report uses a placed wall torch to get a gold bracelet.

Materials, iron rods, and what you should not hunt

The crafting half of a Deep Dish Dungeon guide is a scarcity problem. In the April 28 write-up, only a short list could be gathered or generated. Iron rods are the scarce piece: that player could not make more, and counted three starter rods plus the cooking pot already beside the campfire.

Could gather or generate (April 28 player experience)Could not get or generate in that report
Stick, rock, wood plank, rat, scrap metal, vines, coal, animal hide, apple, raw meat, mushroom, wild pepper, algaeClay, extra iron rods, leather, chains, ragged cloth, log

Pitfalls from that split:

  • Do not search for clay, chains, ragged cloth, or logs on that demo state. They were not farmable for that player.
  • Planks existed; logs did not. Build around planks.
  • Animal hide was obtainable. Leather was on the "could not get or generate" list. No hide-to-leather recipe is shown. HOLD / unknown whether hide converts.
  • HOLD / unknown whether v1013 later added clay or the other missing goods. Item pages are said to cover v1013, but those rows are not in the source text here. This page has no clay route.

Spending a starter rod was the only way that player could craft: nail, backpack, kettle, smelter, wood chest, barricade, workbench, water pot, wooden bridge, wooden bow, hammer, grappling hook, pouch, crude leather armor, scrap cape, medium sword, long sword, and grindstone.

NailPlus rope, helps an out-of-reach sewer ladder; other climbs existUseless until you own the hammer

GrindstoneNamed for upgrades past scrap and planksNot obtainable in that report
Bow, medium sword, long sword, crude leather armor, scrap capeSword and iron shield appear in official artWhether these recipes are that gear is HOLD / unknown
Backpack, kettle, smelter, chest, barricade, workbench, water pot, bridge, pouchNo working use is describedEasy rods to waste

The April post called the nail useless. The June 20 reply corrected it: the hammer pins the nail to a wall, then rope helps a sewer ladder you cannot reach. Other ways up exist, so the nail is optional.

Near the end of that run, weapons upgraded with scrap metal and wood planks. Further upgrades asked for a grindstone they could not build. A forging sequence with different molds was present. The player only guessed that molds should be carried back. HOLD / unknown: the mold list, and whether a later build added the grindstone.

Coal, vines, algae, sticks, and rocks could be generated, but no formula here assigns them. HOLD / unknown for those recipes. Scrap metal and wood planks are the only pair tied to weapon upgrades.

Cooking: raw food, the spit, and the pot

Any Deep Dish Dungeon guide to food should stay smaller than a trailer. Buff numbers are not in these sources. Cook so the expedition changes, not because a table promised a specific bonus.

Rules from the April 28 player experience:

  1. The only food they could eat raw was an apple.
  2. Almost everything else could go on the campfire rotisserie and come off roasted.
  3. The pot already at camp made stews. They did not need a new kettle first.
Dish in the reportWhat went inNotes
VeggiesWild pepper, mushrooms, and appleCooking-pot mix
StewWild pepper, mushroom, or apple, plus raw meatOne plant plus meat
Fish and drumstick stewsButchered fish and the large batJune 20 reply; two of those pieces go in the stew

Read the third row narrowly. The reply says you can also make mushroom fish and drumstick stew by butchering fish and the bat, and that the stew needs two of those pieces. It does not print every slot. HOLD / unknown: exact order, and whether the pot still wants a plant.

Raw meat, in the order the reports support:

  1. Set a rat trap, or grab the rat before it hides under debris.
  2. Do not assume every corpse butchers. The first player hoped creature harvesting would be added. The June reply names fish and the bat, not skeletons or scorpions.
  3. Carry two pieces if the fish or drumstick stew is the goal.

One apple is an emergency ration. Extra apples can be roasted or put in the veggie pot before you drop away from camp.

Hammer, water, enemies, and the Prison Key reports

The traversal half of this Deep Dish Dungeon guide is where that run lost about an hour. The hammer was the pain point. The writer looked for some other tool, because nothing says you can swim. On the path they found, swimming is required.

Reported hammer sequence (player experience; may predate v1013):

  1. Enter the water. Swimming works.
  2. Find the room with the workbench.
  3. Pull the handcrank there.
  4. Search the sewers and take the hammer.
  5. Break metal bars with the hammer.
  6. For a sewer ladder you cannot reach, pin a nail with the hammer and add rope. If that climb is awkward, look for the other way up. The nail is not the only route.

Keep a second sewer fact separate. The moray eel appears only when the water is raised and you are swimming. The post never says the handcrank is what raises the water. Do not merge those into one switch.

That bat is the route landmark in the thread. The player brought the Iron Key to the forge exterior the bat guards and got the Prison Key. Attack patterns and most drops are not listed. The June reply does say the bat can be butchered for the drumstick stew. HOLD / unknown: loot on skeletons, scorpions, and the eel.

Reported treasure spots (community reports, spoilers):

  • Gold bracelet: after the small-key door, in the two-skeleton room, place a wall torch.
  • Gold coins: rafters of the main campfire room. The reach method is not written down.
  • Carranca statue: picked up. Effect unknown. HOLD / unknown.

Demo ending, kept separate from that key swap:

  • A July 2, 2026 playthrough reaches a thank-you screen.
  • Another July report puts the finish past the Prison Key door.
  • The exact build and the full v1013 trigger path are not shown. Some published steps predate v1013.

HOLD / unknown: one verified path from camp to the thank-you screen on the current demo. Use the hammer, Iron Key, and Prison Key as checks when you are stuck. This page is not a frame-perfect route.

Use the Deep Dish Dungeon guide priorities below when the demo stops explaining itself:

  1. Make camp your reset point before you spend rare parts.
  2. Keep an apple, and a way to roast anything else.
  3. Test a swim you can retreat from before you treat water as a kill volume.
  4. Put the first iron-rod craft into the hammer, not a chest or a bridge.
  5. Burn the single reported spider web with a torch. Leave rock, goo, and roots.
  6. At the forge exterior, deal with the large bat and have the Iron Key ready if the Prison Key is the goal.
  7. Upgrade with scrap metal and wood planks if that station is there. Stop when it asks for a grindstone you cannot build.
  8. The demo save will not become your full-game file. Test systems here. Do not hoard a perfect demo inventory.

FAQ

Does this Deep Dish Dungeon guide cover the full game?

No. It covers the free Steam demo and community reports from demo runs. The published full-game date is October 13, 2026, at $14.99, €14.99, or £13.99, on the Steam listing (Windows and macOS) and on Xbox with day-one Game Pass. Demo saves do not transfer, and demo craft locks may not survive launch.

Can you swim, and why is the hammer hard to find?

Yes, in the player report from a finished demo run. Swimming is allowed and was required to reach the hammer. They found it in the sewers after pulling the handcrank in the workbench room. The game does not explain that, which is why the search can take an hour.

What can you cook at camp?

Eat an apple raw. Roast other foods on the campfire. At the pot, reported mixes are wild pepper, mushrooms, and apple, or one of those plants plus raw meat. A June reply adds stews that take two pieces of butchered fish or bat. Exact buff values are HOLD / unknown.

How does the demo end, and is there a map?

No map or compass is planned. You navigate by landmarks and shortcuts. A July 2, 2026 playthrough reaches a thank-you screen, and a separate July report places the finish beyond the Prison Key door. The exact v1013 trigger path is HOLD / unknown, so treat the Prison Key as a lead, not a guaranteed last button.
